About the Journal
Journal of Qur'anic Inquiry and Review (JQIR) is an international peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the study of the Qur'an and its interpretive traditions. The journal provides a scholarly venue for original and critical contributions on the textual, exegetical, hermeneutical, historical, and contemporary dimensions of Qur'anic studies. JQIR seeks to promote rigorous and interdisciplinary research that deepens the understanding of the Qur'an within both Islamic intellectual heritage and modern academic discourse. It welcomes scholarly works that address the Qur'an through diverse methodological perspectives, including classical tafsir, thematic interpretation, linguistic analysis, reception studies, and contemporary critical approaches. The journal aims to facilitate meaningful academic exchange among scholars of Qur'anic studies and related disciplines, and to support the development of Qur'anic scholarship in both local and global contexts.
Current Issue
Volume 1 Issue 1 of the Journal of Qur’anic Inquiry and Review presents a collection of innovative scholarly studies that demonstrate the dynamic engagement of contemporary Qur’anic research with social, environmental, geopolitical, historical, and methodological issues. The articles in this inaugural issue reflect the journal’s commitment to fostering critical inquiry, interdisciplinary dialogue, and methodological advancement within Qur’anic studies. The issue opens with Reconstruction of Social Ethics Based on the Qur'an through Contemporary Digital Thematic Analysis, which explores how digital approaches to thematic interpretation can contribute to the development of a Qur’an-based framework for contemporary social ethics. This is followed by Integration of Qur’anic Ethics and Environmental Science: Revisiting the Meaning of Sail al-‘Arim for Contemporary Flood Mitigation Strategies, a study that bridges Qur’anic perspectives and environmental science to address current ecological challenges and disaster mitigation efforts. Geopolitical dimensions of Qur’anic interpretation are examined in The Strait of Hormuz in the Perspective of Geopolitical Interpretation, which investigates the relevance of strategic geographical locations within contemporary interpretive discourse. Meanwhile, Historical and Rational Approaches to Qur’anic Chronology: al-Jabiri and Darwazah Compared provides a comparative analysis of two influential modern thinkers, highlighting their methodological contributions to understanding the chronological arrangement of Qur’anic revelation. The issue also includes Mount Qaf in Classical and Modern Exegesis: An Epistemological Analysis of the Scientific Paradigm in Qur’anic Interpretation, which critically evaluates the interaction between traditional exegetical perspectives and modern scientific approaches. Concluding the volume, Toward an Integrative Paradigm of Maqāṣidī Tafsir: Epistemological and Methodological Insights from Wasfi Ashur Abu Zayd and Abdul Mustaqim advances a comprehensive framework for maqāṣid-oriented Qur’anic interpretation by examining its underlying epistemological and methodological foundations. Collectively, the articles in this issue illustrate the expanding horizons of contemporary Qur’anic studies and demonstrate how the Qur’an continues to serve as a source of intellectual engagement for addressing present-day challenges. By integrating classical scholarship with modern analytical perspectives, this volume contributes to the ongoing development of Qur’anic inquiry in both academic and practical contexts.
